A series of dermal bones around the orbital cavity. Size and shape of the individual elements are varying considerably according to the taxon in view. There may be one or two supraorbitals located above the eye and up to six infraorbitals (suborbitals) rostra!, ventral and caudal to the eye, respectively. The number varies because the elements may be fused together to a varying degree, depending on the taxon; this makes it difficult to identify an individual element.
