The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) is the official body responsible for providing and regulating the system for ensuring that every animal has a unique and universally accepted scientific name. These rules and regulations are published in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The 4th edition of the Code has now been published and came into effect on 1 January 2000.
