Fishes very often also are designated by common names, in particular those which are of commercial value either as food or as pet fish of the aquarists. However in a continent like Africa where there live hundreds of nations each with a particular language and even dialects of the language, it is rather impossible to find out all vernacular names and to list them. When fishes are fancied as pet fishes and imported to various countries outside their homeland, they are given again vernacular names, often several ones in the same language, one only may check the aquarists literature. Quite often these names then are more or less intelligent translations of the scientific species names without much meaning. That again makes it impossible to list them all without preferring or ignoring some of them. We thus decided to refer to vernacular names only on very few occasions.
