Genus Hippopotamyrus

Body elongate to moderately deep; head bluntly rounded, snout short, mouth subterminal or terminal; chin with slight to strong submental swelling; base of dorsal fin may be slightly longer, shorter or equal in length with anal fin; anterior rays of both fins longer than following rays; caudal fin obtusely pointed or pointed, both in the scaled and membranous portion.
