Species overview
Medium sized fish, body moderately deep, body depth 4-5 times in SL, head round-snouted, mouth subterminal, dorsal fin slightly shorter than anal. Dark brown.

Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate, laterally compressed, moderately deep, depth of body 19-22 (-23*) % SL, greatest depth between pelvic and anal fin. Length of head 20-27* % SL, depth of head (11-*)14-18 % SL, 70-97* % depth of body.
-Outlines of back and belly slightly convex, upper profile of head strongly convex, underside of head concave.
-Snout rounded, short, 16-23* % SL, 26-36* % postorbital length, clearly protruding mouth.
-Mouth subterminal, 15-22* % length of head, its edge below posterior nostril, upper jaw on a level with upper edge base of pectoral fin.
-Chin inconspicuous, without swelling.
-Teeth notched 5/6.
-Nostrils separate, circular, anterior a little below centre of eye, posterior on a level with lower rim of eye, axis of nostrils cutting axis of head at an angle of about 40°. (In B. cabrae this angle is steeper.) Eye 8-13* % length of head.
-Opercular cleft slightly rounded, 26-41* % length of head, 39-57* % depth of head.
-Dorsal fin 17 (15-18*) rays, base of D (15*-19) 16-20 % SL ,anal fin 22 (20-25*) rays, base of A 19-24* % SL, origin of D behind origin of A, end of D before end of A. Predorsal length 63-69* % SL, preanal length 59-64*% SL.
-Pectoral rounded, nearly reaching base of pelvic, base of P at lower edge of opercular cleft; V is closer to P than to A.
-Caudal with rounded scaled lobes, half as long as obtusely pointed membranes. 56 (57-60*) scales in lateral line, 12- 16* round caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle (15-*) 16-19 % SL, its depth 5-7* % SL, 29-46* % its length.

-Coloration Uniform dark brown.
