Brienomyrus (Brienomyrus) longianalis Taverne, 1971a, 106

Remark on taxonomy
Boulenger, 1898f: 794 assumed Mormyrus microcephalus Günther, 1867 to be a synonym of Marcusenius brachyistius Gill, 1863, but did neither realise the striking differences between both taxa nor the striking similarities with Marcusenius longianalis he described in 1901.
Mormyrus microcephalus differs in so many characters from Brienomyrus brachyistius and on the other hand matches so many characters of Brienomyrus longianalis that there is no reason to assume synonymy of the first mentioned taxa. Instead Mormyrus microcephalus and Brienomyrus longianalis are matching in all features, hence they are true synonyms with priority of the species designation microcephalus which no doubt belongs into the genus Brienomyrus as Taverne, 1971a: 106 suggested. (The data of the type of M. microcephalus were not taken into account in the descriptions of B. brachyistius but included into the data of B. longianalis.)
