Remark on taxonomy
Gosse, 1966, most probably in error, made Gnathonemus histrio a synonym of Gnathonemus brevicaudatus. However, in lateral line scales G. histrio (46-49) corresponds to Gnathonemus barbatus (47-49), whereas G. brevicaudatus (57-60) corresponds to G. petersii (63-70). Bigorne (1990, in both publications) affirmed the latter synonymy. (G. barbatus , however, must be regarded as the junior synonym of G. histrio)
