Hippopotamyrus petherici (Boulenger, 1898)
Synonyms
Marcusenius petherici n. sp. Boulenger, 1898f: 797,
Pollimyrus petherici: Taverne, 1971a: 105.
Mormyrus discorhynchus (non Peters): Günther, 1866a: 220.
Remark on taxonomy
The position of the nostrils, in particular of the posterior nostril clearly away from the rim of the eye, the position of the first ray of the dorsal fin much anterior to the first ray of the anal fin, the greater length of D as well as the (though only occasional) presence of a dark bar between the unpaired fins are unusual characters within the genus Pollimyrus. This makes it much more likely that Pollimyrus petherici actually belongs into the genus Hippopotamyrus where these features are quite common.
Etymology
