Remark on taxonomy
Revision of the characters suggests that Hippopotamyrus macrops (Boulenger, 1909) actually is a synonym of Hippopotamyrus wilverthi (Boulenger, 1898). This also applies to the syntype MRAC 7750 of Hippopotamyrus macroterops (whereas the other syntype - BMNH 1919.9.10: 36 - belongs into Pollimyrus).
Etymology
Dedicated to Capitain Wilverth, who collected fishes in the then »Independant State of Congo«, (later on »Congo Belge«, »Republic of Zaïre«, now »Democratic Republic of Congo«) and organised the exhibition of African fishes on occasion of the Brussels World Faire in 1897, base of the Musée royal de l’ Afrique Centrale - Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika, Tervuren.
(gr): macráos: large, long; size of animals or their organs; (lat.): -ops as second part of a word: eye, visual organ.
