Remarks on synonymy.
The original sample of Mormyrus longirostris obviously consisted of two different species and has been divided by Boulenger (1898f: 817) who placed one part into Mormyrus caschive Linné, 1978. Common character is the presence of two large cutaneous sensory organs below the eyes in M. caschive and the true M. longirostris, however the distribution of the two taxa and differences in some meristics justifies their taxonomic separation. However, in M. mucupe the suborbital tuberous organs are missing, so it can not be regarded as a synonym of M. longirostris . [Bell-Cross and Minshull, 1988 reported size and weight - up to 22 lb or 9.973 kg in Lake Kariba in 1972 - , but did not differentiate between M. longirostris and M. mucupe , however the fish they have pictured clearly shows the suborbital tuberous organ and so no doubt is a M. longirostris ]. See also Mormyrus mucupe .
