Species overview
Medium sized fish, laterally compressed, body rather bulky, upper profile of head slightly concave, sloping to the snout which is rounded and about as long as deep, about one third as deep as head; mouth slightly subterminal, underside of head concave. Base of dorsal fin more than half as long as base of anal. Caudal peduncle short and slender.

Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate, laterally compressed, rather bulky, cross section oblong-oval, depth 18-25 % SL, greatest body depth about the middle of the trunk.
-Head length 24-34 % SL, head depth 16-22 % SL, 75-90 % body depth.
-Outlines of back and belly feebly curved, upper profile of head slightly concave, underside of head concave.
-Snout slightly protruding mouth, much less deep than postorbital region of head, 19-25 % head length, 27-36 % postorbital length.
-Mouth 10-19 % head length, slightly subterminal.
-Chin with submental swelling, without.
-Teeth notched, 6-7/8.
-Nostrils separate, circular to slightly oval (in particular the posterior one) halfway between eye and tip of snout, anterior below centre of eye, posterior at level of the lower rim of eye; axis of nostrils cutting axis of head at an angle of about 30°.
-Eye very small, 5-10 % head length, 8-14 % postorbital length.
-Opercular slightly curved, 23-33 % head length, 36-48 % head depth.
-Dorsal 18-19, its base 14-19 % SL, anal fin 24-26 rays, base of A 23-27 % SL; origin of D well posterior to A, end of D anterior to end of A; predorsal length 67-73 % SL, preanal length 57-64 % SL.
-Pectoral obtusely pointed, extending slightly beyond base of pelvic. V is closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin with rounded membrane and scaled lobe, which is as long as the membrane. Lateral line 58-62 scales, 12 round caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle 9-16 % SL, its depth 4-6 % SL, 28-50 % its length.
-Coloration Brown, slightly countershaded, in larger specimens scales with darker border. Scaled lobe of C darker, fin rays blackish, fin membranes transparent.
