Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate, laterally compress, depth moderate, 24 % SL, greatest depth at origin of anal fin, Head length, without snout, 28 % SL, head depth 17 % SL, 71 % body depth.
-Outline of back more or less straight, upper profile convex, underside of head concave, outline of belly straight.
-Snout rather short, trunk-shaped, 60 % head length, 153 % postorbital length, moderately bent down; distally compress, quite deep; upper jaw on a level with upper edge of opercular cleft; chin on a level with below origin of pectoral fin; tip of snout not protruding mouth. (The extreme shape of the snout changes with age/size of the fish, in juveniles it is much less obvious).
-Mouth terminal, edge of mouth very far away from nostrils, upper jaw on a level with lower edge of opercular cleft.
-Chin with submental swelling, rather big, with barbel which measures about 60 % of eye diameter.
-Teeth long, conical, 3/5.
-Nostrils separate, anterior somewhat above posterior which is a little less than the diameter of eye away from it; axis of nostrils cuts axis of head at an angle of less than 30°.
-Eye close to front contour, in diameter 12 % head length.
-Opercular cleft 42 % head depth, S-shaped, running at an angle of about 45° backward.
-Dorsal fin 27 rays, base of dorsal 21 %, anal fin 30 rays, 24 % SL, D originating behind origin of A, ending before end of A. Predorsal length 63 % SL, preanal length 60 % SL.
-Pectoral obtusely pointed, originating at the middle of opercular cleft, extending to middle of pelvic fin, which is closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin large, upper lobe bigger than lower one, membranes and scaled lobes rounded, membranes longer than scaled parts. About 105 scales in lateral line, 20 scales around caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle 17 % SL, its depth 6 % SL, 32 % its length.
-Coloration; »Uniform greyish-brown-purplish, slightly countershaded, fins all darker; no particular markings.
