Species overview
Small fish, body depth equal to head length, snout blunt, mouth subterminal, clearly below level of eye, caudal peduncle quite short and deep. Size observed: 175 mm SL.

Taxonomic description
-Body moderately deep, body depth 27-28 % SL, laterally compressed, head length 23-27 % SL, head depth 23-24 % SL, back and belly slightly curved, front profile convex, tip of snout sloping steeper, slightly protruding mouth; gular profile slightly concave.
-Snout 19-26 % head length, 32-41 % postorbital length; postorbital length 61-64 % head length.
-Mouth small, subterminal, clearly in front of but below eye.
-Chin with moderate submental swelling, without appendage.
-Teeth notched (number not indicated in description).
-Nostrils circular, posterior on a level with lower margin of eye, anterior a little above, both midway between eye and end of snout.
-Eye small, its distance from outline of head equals its diameter.
-Opercular cleft curved, 36-39 % head length, 37-41 % head depth.
-Dorsal fin 18-20 fin-rays, its base 15-19 % head length, anal fin 23-24 rays, its base 28-22 % SL; D originating behind, ending before A, margins of D and A rather straight.
-Pectoral fin rounded, its base at lower half opercular cleft, extending to base of pelvic fin. V closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin rounded, scaled lobes rounded, 1/2 as long as entire fin. 70 scales in lateral line, 20 scales round caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle 15-18 % SL, its depth 9 % SL, 48-61 % its length.
-Coloration Uniform dark brown, numerous black dots all over the body.

Remark:
This species originally is known only from a type in the NMW, Vienna, but there is another specimen in the BMNH, London. The data given here are based on both specimens.
