Mooneyes
There are two species of Hiodon both restricted to North America.
Hiodon alosoides, (Rafinisque, 1819) the goldeye, of the Mississippi - region and Louisiana northward to the rivers in the Great Plains, USA up to the Mackenzie river and the Great Slave Lake, Canada. It is herring-like in body shape and coloration, most striking is the golden iris of the eye. It grows up to 50 cm.
Hiodon tergisus LeSueur, 1818, the mooneye, is similar in body shape and coloration, but has a silvery iris and attains only 40 cm. It occurs from the tributaries of the Hudson Bay to the St. Lorenz River, the southern parts of the Great Lakes and down to Alabama and Arkansas.
