Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate, laterally compressed, body depth 18-26 % SL, greatest depth close to anal fin.
-Head, measured without snout 19-24 % SL, snout inclusive 37-40, head depth 16-21 % SL, 73-83 % body depth.
-Outlines of back more or less straight, upper profile of head convex, on proximal portion of snout slightly concave, distally curved down; underside of head strongly concave, continuing into slightly convex outline of belly.
-Snout or rostrum very long, extending beyond deepest point of body, compressed, about 8 times as long as deep, its depth a little more than eye diameter. (The extreme shape of the snout changes with age/size of the fish, in juveniles it is much less obvious).
-Mouth small, 1/2 eye diameter, directed forward-downwards, edge of mouth very far away from anterior nostril, upper jaw much below head.
-Chin with moderate submental swelling and a barbel, 1.2 times of eye diameter.
-Teeth 3/3, shape not indicated.
-Eye moderate, close to front profile.
-Nostrils separate, in juveniles on a level with lower rim of eye, in adults deeper, anterior close to outline of snout, circular, posterior oval, up to 2 times eye diameter away from eye, axis of nostrils cuts axis of head at an angle of about 30°.
-Opercular cleft 33-47 % head depth, S-shaped.
-Dorsal fin 31 rays, anal 35 rays, base of D 20-22 % SL, base of A 21-25 % SL, origin of D behind origin of A, end of D opposite end of A. Predorsal length 66-67 % SL, preanal length 61-64 % SL.
-Pectoral fin obtusely pointed, its origin at middle of opercular cleft, extending to middle of pelvic fin, V closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin obtusely pointed, scaled portion short. 86 scales in lateral line, 20 round caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle 14-16 % SL, its depth 4-5 % SL, 27-35 % its length.
-Coloration Generally brownish with darker back, a darker band between D and A, in younger specimens more obvious and followed by a second band; fins greyish.
