Species overview
Larger-sized fish, body moderately deep, back rather straight; front sloping, end of snout steeply sloping; mouth subterminal. Dark brown with slightly brighter underside; dark bands between unpaired fins. Size observed: 247 mm SL.
Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate, laterally compressed, without a hump in the occipital region, body depth 27-28 % SL, greatest depth near anal fin.
-Head length 27-32 % SL, head depth 23-24 % SL, 86-87 % body depth.
-Outline of back straight, running almost parallel to outline of belly; front profile straight or slightly concave, gular profile slightly concave.
-Snout clearly projecting mouth, with blunt, beak-like with deep upper jaw, length of snout 29-32 % head length, 49-52 % postorbital length; upper jaw on a level much closer to underside of head than to lower edge opercular cleft.
-Mouth wide, subterminal, its edge reaching to level of posterior nostril.
-Chin with inconspicuous, without swelling.
-Teeth slightly notched, 4-7/5-8, often hidden in the gums.
-Nostrils separate, anterior circular, posterior one slightly oval, its distance from the eye about two times the distance from anterior nostril; posterior nostril on a level with lower margin of eye, anterior nostril above, their axis cutting axis of head at an angle of about 30ª.
-Eye diameter 9-10 % head length, 16-17 % postorbital length.
-Opercular cleft curved, 32 % head length, 37-42 % head depth.
-Dorsal fin 20-24 fin-rays, base of D 17-19 % SL, anal fin 26-30 rays, base of A 22-26 % SL, origin of D posterior to A, end of D opposite end of A; predorsal length 63-64 % SL, preanal length 59-60 % SL.
-Pectoral fin pointed, extending beyond middle of pelvic fin. V is closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin large with pointed scaled lobes and fin membranes, scaled portion shorter membranes. 50-57 scales in lateral line; 12 round caudal peduncle.
-Caudal peduncle 20 % SL, its depth 6 % SL, 28-29 % its length.
