Marcusenius annamariae (Parenzan, 1939)
Species overview
Medium-sized fish, body moderately deep, head uneven blunt-snouted, base of dorsal fin shorter than base of anal, caudal peduncle rather deep, caudal fin large, obtusely pointed. Greyish to brownish, countershaded. Size observed: 255 mm SL, 295 mm TL.

Taxonomic description
-Body moderately elongate and deep, depth of body about three times in SL, greatest depth near origin of anal fin.
-Head about as long as depth of body.
-Outlines of back and belly slightly convex; upper profile of head convex, underside of head concave.
-Snout obtusely pointed, about 1/3 length of head, 1/2 postorbital length.
-Mouth terminal, its edge before anterior nostril, upper jaw on a level with centre of eye.
-Chin with protruding globular swelling.
-Teeth 3/6, shape of teeth not indicated.
-Nostrils separate, circular, anterior on level with centre of eye, posterior with lower rim of eye, axis of nostrils cuts axis of head at an angle of about 60°.
-Eye diameter about half length of snout.
-Opercular cleft curved, its length about 1/4 depth of head.
-Dorsal fin 23-25 fin-rays, base of D shorter than base of anal fin; anal fin 29-31 rays; origin of D behind origin of A, end of D before end of A; predorsal length slightly longer than preanal length.
-Pectoral fin pointed, extending to middle of pelvic fin. V is closer to P than to A.
-Caudal fin obtusely, basal portion scaled. About 70 scales in lateral line, number of scales round caudal peduncle not indicated.
-Caudal peduncle about 3 times as long as deep, no measurements known.
-Coloration »?generale bigio-verdiccio-brunicio, più scuro superioramente, a reflessi argentei«. Generally greyish-greenish-brownish, darker on the back (countershaded), with silvery shine.
Very little known species, only two specimens are known, no types were deposited; this description is based on the two photographs published with the original. (see Remark on taxonomy in Synonyms tab)

»Lhagi Margherita e Ruspoli«. Ethiopia, recently Lake Abaya - Abaya Hayt - (06° 20 ‘ N 37° 55 ‘ E) and Lake Shamo - Chamo Hayk - (05° 50 ‘ N 37° 40 ‘ E).
